有着爱尔兰血统的布鲁斯威利斯1955年3月19日生于西德。两岁时，他随家人回到了故乡美国新泽西州。他从小就对表演有着浓厚的兴趣。中学毕业后布鲁斯威利曾从事过多种职业。他担任过乐队的口琴伴奏，开过卡车，还当过夜间警卫和酒店侍者。但他并不愿就此默默无闻地度过一生，他决心要出人头地，成为一名演员是他从来也不曾放弃过的目标。

1977年，布鲁斯威利斯得到了参加演出的机会。他在舞台剧《天与地》(《Heaven and Earth》1977)中获得了一个角色，他的表现开始引起了人们的注意。此后，布鲁斯威利曾参加了多部电影及电视剧的演出，但都未出名，

直到1985年，他主演的电视剧《蓝色月光》(《Moonlight》1985-1989)播出后，情况才发生了变化，该剧极受欢迎，在电视台连续播出了数年之久，布鲁斯威利也由此广为人知，成为颇受欢迎的明星。

1994年，布鲁斯威利又在影片《低俗小说》和《夜色》中有着相当不错的表现。他那日益精进的演技得到了观众和影评家们的一致好评。

1995年，除了以《虎胆龙威》第三集再次在全美掀起了一股票房风暴外，他主演的影片《十二只猴子》也颇受好评。而在1996年布鲁斯威利的新片《不败枭雄》又再次受到了广泛的赞誉。

布鲁斯威利1987年11月与黛米摩尔结婚。两人是一对在影坛上极受瞩目的幸福夫妻。(1998年两人离婚)
